The Best And Worst Awards of 2004

(or at least the most insane)

You've been waiting for it. Your soul has been yearning for it. You've laid awake at nights thinking about it. Now, finally, feast your eyes upon THE BEST AND WORST AWARDS OF 2004!

This is only a small sampling, which I may give in installments, but here's a small taste of my thoughts.

Without further ado...
THE BEST AND WORST AWARDS OF 2004
The Best...

Best Trip: The Chautauqua Games
Held during the summer of 2004, this little trip involved some of the most heart-pounding moments of the year. It included speeding tickets, dehydration, drunken debauchery, gambling, awards, and mishaps. The first floor's toilet gushing thousands of gallons of water into the first floor hallway and pouring a waterfall into the basement will be a memory that sticks with me for a long time. Combined with the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in one overly-long competition, the Chautauqua Games will go down famously - or at least infamously - as one of the craziest events in Moulden 108 history.

Best Unexpected Visit: Jess Visits From California
Rumored to be occurring for months on end, the suddence appearance of Jess from California was an absolutely fantastic time. Books, scrunchies, and all manner of catching-up was accomplished, proving once again that distance need not spell a death-knell for a friendship. Such a meaningful and fun time was completely unexpected, and the sheer delight of such a good development places this visit tops in its category.

Best Day: The 100+ E-mail Day
A day that will go down as the least productive work day in recent memory, the 100+ e-mail day was a day that the five guys just started e-mailing each other with long, comprehensive e-mails, starting on the subject of Jeff Ambury being on vacation and thus away from his computer and unable to defend himself. With the guys e-mailing each other from their summer jobs, it quickly turned into some of the greatest and best e-mails of the year, epitomizing the friendship created and tested during years at Villanova. The day included the unprecedented e-mailing of Nate Wildfire, a full transcript of a Shaggy-Nate lunch meeting and walk, a discussion on general Ambury insults and a final sign-off worthy of a movie. Best of all, this massive ignorance of work and duty occurred without any prior agreement or discussion. This day easily takes the cake as best overall day of the year.

And the Worst...

Worst Single Moment In Time: Croquet Mallet Flying Through Air
Like a camera in my mind, the picture of a croquet mallet sailing end-over-end through the gray Chautauqua morning towards my mom's brand new Volvo will forever be burned into my retinas. Thrown by Dave Wilson, I remember calculating the trajectory in relation to the car and realizing that the two were headed for a head-on collison, and the pure stunning horror of it all is nearly overwhelming to this day. While the cause is mired in mystery, the results are crystal clear - the huge two-sided dent in the front of the new Volvo, the $1204.63 bill from the repair shop, and the hands-down winner in this category.

Worst Cooking Mistake: Breaking The Garbage Disposal
Attempting for the first time to cook noodles in my new apartment, I wasn't used to the power of the stove and didn't have enough water for the noodles. What ended up happening was the water boiled off, thus exposing the noodles directly to the heat and welding them to the pot in a congealed, goopy mass. Attempting to scrape the substance off of the pot with a knife, I tried to dispose of it down the garbage disposal, thinking that the disposal would be like my one at home and merely munch it. I put it all down, went to turn it on, and WHIRRRRRR... nothing. The noodles had gammed up the disposal and broken it. I was unable to reach the noodles in the innards of the garbage disposal, and they began rotting, filling my apartment with a horrendous stench and making my kitchen all but unusable. Two men had to come out to clear the disposal of the worst cooking mistake of 2004.

Worst Drinking Night: Senior Trip Tips
Having taken out trash for weeks and saved up in a tight money situation, I had finally raised enough to pay my plane fare for Puerto Rico on the Singers Trip at the end of senior year. After missing out on the Austria-Hungary trip the year before, this would be my first time out of this country in my life. The night before the trip, my grandfather passed away and although my parents told me I could still go, I decided not to go. However, at Trip Tips that night, the bottle of 151 that had lasted me my entire college career was emptied and I was very drunk for the first and only time in my life. The guys came through, however, taking my 151 bottle to Puerto Rico and smuggling out of the country some real sand from Puerto Rico, now sitting in my apartment prominently. This, however, only assuages how horrendous I felt during the night. This easily makes the worst drinking list of 2004.

Perhaps I should add more categories? Chime in as necessary. The look back at 2004 isn't over yet!
